Description

The disease known as downy mildew of brassicas is caused by the oomycete Hyaloperonospora brassicae. It is a major pathogen affecting a wide range of economically important cruciferous crops, including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, rapeseed, and mustard. The fungus is an obligate parasite, meaning it requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle and thrive.

Symptoms typically begin on the upper side of the leaves as pale green or yellow chlorotic spots, which eventually become angular as they are restricted by leaf veins. Under conditions of high humidity, a characteristic white to grayish downy growth of mycelium and sporangia appears on the corresponding lower leaf surface. In severe cases, the lesions turn necrotic, causing the leaves to curl, yellow, and wither.

The development and spread of Hyaloperonospora brassicae are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. It thrives in cool, moist weather, with temperatures between 15°C and 20°C being optimal for sporulation and infection. High relative humidity and the presence of leaf moisture, such as dew or rain, are essential for the germination of sporangia and the subsequent infection of host tissue.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it can cause substantial yield losses and degradation of crop quality. Early infection of seedlings often results in total plant loss. In mature crops, the reduction of the photosynthetic leaf area stunts growth and impacts the formation of heads or pods. Furthermore, infected plants are predisposed to secondary infections, which can severely compromise post-harvest storage.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, ensuring adequate air circulation through proper plant spacing, and removing crop residues are vital to reduce inoculum levels. Additionally, seed treatments and the timely application of fungicides from classes such as phenylamides or strobilurins are essential when environmental conditions favor disease development.
