Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Hyaloperonospora cheiranthi, a specialized pathogen belonging to the downy mildew group. It is highly specific to the Brassicaceae family, primarily targeting stocks (Matthiola) and related ornamental plants. This infection is considered a significant threat to greenhouse production and open-field ornamental horticulture.
The host range is centered on various species of Matthiola, causing systemic or localized infections depending on the environmental conditions. The pathogen survives between seasons in the form of dormant oospores located in plant debris or within the soil, allowing it to re-emerge whenever favorable conditions arise for the new generation of plants.
Symptoms initially appear as chlorotic, pale-yellow patches on the upper surface of the leaves. As the infection progresses, a characteristic white to gray fuzzy growth, composed of sporangiophores, develops on the underside of the foliage. In severe cases, these lesions turn necrotic, resulting in leaf curling, premature yellowing, and eventually death of the affected tissues, significantly reducing the plant's decorative value.
High relative humidity (typically over 80%), moderate temperatures (15–22°C), and the presence of free water on leaf surfaces are the critical factors for the rapid spread of the disease. In greenhouse settings, lack of proper ventilation combined with overhead watering often creates an ideal microclimate for the pathogen's sporulation and subsequent infection of healthy tissues.
The economic impact of Hyaloperonospora cheiranthi is defined by the loss of plant vigor, poor quality of cut flowers, and complete crop failure if not managed early. Effective control relies on integrated management practices:
- Sanitation, specifically the removal and destruction of infected plant material.
- Improving air circulation by maintaining proper spacing between plants.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep the foliage dry.
- Application of systemic fungicides, including those containing metalaxyl or fosetyl-aluminum, at the first sign of symptoms.
- Using pathogen-free seeds and monitoring nursery stock regularly for early detection.
