Description
The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Hyaloperonospora cochleariae, which induces downy mildew. This highly specialized pathogen targets plants within the Brassicaceae family, primarily affecting scurvygrass (Cochlearia officinalis).
The symptoms of the infection are characterized by the development of chlorotic lesions on the upper surface of the leaves. As the disease progresses, a characteristic gray or white downy growth, consisting of sporangiophores and sporangia, emerges on the underside of the infected foliage under high humidity conditions.
The development and spread of this pathogen are driven by environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C. Water films on the leaf surface are essential for the germination of zoospores, which facilitate rapid colonization of plant tissues.
The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it severely degrades the quality and marketability of the produce. Infected plants show reduced vigor, and severe infestations often lead to premature leaf senescence and necrosis, resulting in substantial yield losses for commercial growers.
Effective management strategies include implementing crop rotation and ensuring adequate plant spacing to maintain airflow. Cultural practices, such as avoiding overhead irrigation and removing crop debris, are crucial for disease prevention. In cases of severe pressure, chemical intervention with appropriate fungicides targeting oomycetes may be required.
