Description

The disease is caused by the oomycete Hyaloperonospora erucae, which is a major pathogen responsible for downy mildew in various Brassicaceae crops. As an obligate parasite, it colonizes the host's tissues, depriving the plant of essential nutrients and disrupting its physiological processes, which often leads to severe crop damage.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to this pathogen, including arugula (rocket), mustard, oilseed rape, radish, and various cabbage species. The pathogen is particularly problematic in intensive production systems where high-density planting and moisture management create a favorable microclimate for the development of the oomycete.

The primary symptoms appear as chlorotic, irregular spots on the upper leaf surface, which later turn yellow or necrotic. In conditions of high humidity, a characteristic downy growth of grayish or purplish-gray color, representing the sporulation of the pathogen, appears on the underside of the leaves, marking the active phase of the disease.

The spread of the pathogen is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly cool to moderate temperatures and high moisture levels, such as persistent dew, fog, or frequent rain. Spores are easily disseminated by wind currents, splashing water from irrigation, and contaminated farming tools, allowing the disease to spread rapidly throughout a field.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to reduced crop quality, marketability, and overall yield loss. In leafy brassicas like arugula, even minor infection can render the produce unsalable. If the infection occurs early in the growing season, it can cause stunted growth and even plant death.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Prevention is key, including the use of disease-free seeds, long-term crop rotation, and the removal of cruciferous weeds that can serve as alternative hosts. When chemical intervention is necessary, the strategic application of fungicides, specifically targeting oomycetes, should be performed early in the infection cycle to prevent mass sporulation.
