Hyaloperonospora lobulariae is an obligate oomycete pathogen responsible for downy mildew in plants belonging to the genus Lobularia, commonly known as sweet alyssum. Unlike true powdery mildews, this pathogen thrives in moist environments and specifically targets the foliar tissues, severely impacting the host's vitality.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic, yellowing spots on the upper leaf surface, often angular in shape. On the underside of the leaves, a diagnostic white or greyish downy growth appears, consisting of sporangiophores and sporangia. As the infection progresses, the leaves may curl, turn necrotic, and eventually drop off the plant prematurely.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on cool temperatures and high humidity levels. Water films on the leaf surface, caused by rain, dew, or overhead irrigation, are essential for the germination of sporangia. Once established, the pathogen spreads rapidly via wind and splashing water, making dense plantings particularly vulnerable to rapid outbreaks.
