The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Hyaloperonospora lunariae, which is responsible for downy mildew in plants belonging to the genus Lunaria. Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic patches on the upper surface of the leaves, which eventually turn yellowish or brownish as the tissue dies. During periods of high humidity, a distinctive grayish-white or purple-tinted fuzzy growth appears on the underside of the leaves, which is composed of the pathogen's sporangia and sporangiophores.
