Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Hyaloperonospora niessleana, a highly specialized obligate pathogen targeting members of the Brassicaceae family. It is widely recognized as the primary cause of downy mildew in various mustard species, posing a persistent threat to commercial cultivation worldwide.
Symptoms typically appear as irregular, chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, which eventually turn necrotic. In conditions of high humidity, a diagnostic fuzzy growth, often white to purplish in color, develops on the abaxial (lower) side of the leaves, representing the sporulation of the pathogen.
Optimal conditions for infection include cool, wet weather, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C and high leaf wetness duration. The pathogen can overwinter in soil as oospores or survive in crop debris, ensuring that subsequent crops are exposed to the inoculum early in their growth cycle.
The disease causes significant damage by reducing the total photosynthetic area of the canopy, leading to severe leaf senescence and drop. This damage restricts the plant's ability to fill seeds properly, resulting in yield losses that can be substantial if favorable environmental conditions for the fungus persist throughout the season.
Effective management requires a comprehensive approach, primarily focused on cultural practices and chemical control. Growers are advised to implement strict crop rotations, ensure balanced fertilization to avoid excessive nitrogen, and apply targeted fungicides early in the season to prevent the secondary spread of the disease within the crop canopy.
