Description

The causal agent of downy mildew in cruciferous crops is the oomycete Hyaloperonospora parasitica. This obligate parasite is a significant threat to agriculture, specifically targeting plants within the Brassicaceae family, and is known for its ability to devastate both seedlings and mature plants.

Common hosts include various types of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, radish, and oilseed rape. The pathogen colonizes the intercellular spaces of the host tissue, extracting nutrients through haustoria, which leads to the weakening and eventual death of the affected plant parts.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic, irregular spots on the upper leaf surface, bounded by veins. Under conditions of high humidity, a diagnostic white or greyish downy growth of sporangiophores appears on the underside of the leaves. Severe infections can cause leaf senescence, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in overall yield quality.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C. The pathogen spreads via sporangia, which are disseminated by wind and splashing water. Resting spores, known as oospores, allow the fungus to persist in soil and debris for extended periods.

Integrated disease management (IDM) is essential for controlling Hyaloperonospora parasitica. Prevention includes the use of disease-free seeds and seedlings, removal of volunteer brassica weeds, and proper crop rotation. In commercial production, targeted application of contact and systemic fungicides is often required to suppress outbreaks and prevent economic losses.
