Downy mildew of pennycress

The causal agent of this disease is Hyaloperonospora thlaspeos-arvensis, an obligate oomycete pathogen responsible for downy mildew. It is a highly specialized microorganism that primarily infects plants within the Brassicaceae family, with Thlaspi arvense (field pennycress) being its most common host in agricultural environments.

This pathogen is significant in agriculture primarily because it utilizes common weeds as a reservoir for infection. By surviving and reproducing on weed species, the fungus ensures a constant source of inoculum that can potentially compromise the health of economically important Brassicaceous crops growing in proximity.

The visible symptoms of the infection include chlorotic lesions on the upper leaf surface. Simultaneously, a diagnostic downy growth, which is actually the fungal mycelium and sporangiophores, develops on the undersides of the leaves. Under severe conditions, the affected leaves turn yellow, wilt, and eventually die, leading to significant reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the weed.

The development and spread of Hyaloperonospora thlaspeos-arvensis are heavily dependent on climatic factors. High humidity, heavy morning dews, and moderate temperatures provide the optimal environment for the germination of sporangia and the spread of zoospores. The pathogen produces thick-walled oospores that allow it to overwinter in the soil, ensuring its presence for subsequent growing seasons.

Control measures are essential to manage the inoculum levels and prevent cross-contamination. Integrated pest management strategies include the following:
