Hyaloscyphaceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi that includes several species capable of causing necrotic diseases in plants. While many members of this family function primarily as saprotrophs, some exhibit pathogenic behavior, colonizing plant tissues and causing significant decay in weakened or stressed specimens.
The host range for these fungi includes various fruit trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. The infection process typically begins when spores land on fresh wounds, pruning cuts, or fissures in the bark, allowing the mycelium to penetrate deeper into the vascular tissue of the plant.
Symptoms are often identified by the presence of small, characteristic apothecia, which appear as tiny, brightly colored cups on the bark or stems. The tissue surrounding these bodies often shows signs of necrosis, including darkening, cracking, and the formation of depressed cankers that interfere with the plant's nutrient transport system.
Development and spread are favored by prolonged periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures. These conditions stimulate spore production and dispersal via wind and water splashes. Dense foliage and poor air circulation within the canopy create a microclimate that accelerates the progression of the fungal colonization.
The impact of Hyaloscyphaceae infection ranges from the dieback of individual twigs to the overall decline of the plant’s health. To minimize risk, growers should implement the following strategy:
- pruning and disposing of infected stems to reduce the inoculum load;
- applying fungicidal treatments after significant pruning;
- maintaining plant vigor through proper nutrition and watering;
- ensuring adequate spacing to improve air circulation and reduce humidity around stems.
