The Hydnaceae family includes a diverse group of basidiomycete fungi recognized primarily by their distinct spinose (needle-like) hymenophore. While not typically classified as primary pathogens for common field crops, they are significant in forest pathology and horticulture as agents of wood decay, often impacting the long-term health of orchard trees and shelterbelts.

The causative agents are the reproductive bodies of these fungi, which release basidiospores into the environment. These spores are capable of germinating on exposed wood surfaces, initiating a complex process of enzymatic breakdown of structural plant polymers such as cellulose and lignin. This biological activity is essential for nature but detrimental to timber and tree vitality.

Spores are primarily wind-dispersed, allowing the fungus to colonize new susceptible hosts over significant distances once the environmental criteria are met.

Effective management and prevention strategies revolve around maintaining tree vigor and minimizing entry points for fungal infection. It is crucial to perform regular pruning to remove dead or dying branches, treat all pruning cuts with appropriate wound sealants, and ensure proper soil drainage to prevent tree stress. Monitoring forest margins and orchards for early signs of decay is the best proactive approach.
