In agronomy, they are known to cause root rots and wood decay, which significantly impact the health and longevity of various perennial plants and specialized crop species.
The disease is caused by fungal pathogens that penetrate the host tissue, causing tissue breakdown through enzymatic secretion. The type of disease is primarily categorized as rot, specifically affecting the roots or lower trunk of the plant, which hampers the transport of essential nutrients and moisture from the soil to the leaves.
Commonly affected crops include forest trees, orchard fruit trees, and occasionally ornamental plants. Vulnerability increases when the host is physically damaged or suffering from suboptimal environmental conditions, as these stressors compromise the natural defense mechanisms of the plant against fungal infiltration.
Signs of infestation include stunted growth, chlorosis, wilting, and the visible presence of fungal structures near the root crown or on the bark. As the disease progresses, the internal wood structure becomes degraded, leading to a loss of mechanical stability for the plant, which may result in sudden collapse.
