Description
Hydnopolyporus is a genus of fungi recognized in agronomy and forestry as a serious wood-decaying pathogen. It is responsible for causing significant rot within the trunks and roots of various tree species, leading to long-term structural damage and often resulting in the premature death of the host plant.
The fungus predominantly targets deciduous trees. While it is most aggressive in trees already suffering from environmental stress, it is opportunistic and can infect healthy trees through physical wounds, pruning cuts, or other openings in the protective bark layer that expose the inner wood.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of unique, hydnoid (spine-bearing) fruit bodies on the bark or at the root collar. Internally, the fungus causes severe white rot, breaking down wood tissues and rendering the tree susceptible to breakage or windthrow during storms due to the loss of mechanical strength.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread and development of Hydnopolyporus include high humidity and periods of prolonged rainfall, which facilitate spore germination. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deep into the heartwood, spreading through the vascular system and consuming nutrients, which effectively starves the host.
