Hydnoporia yasudae is a specific fungal disease caused by the basidiomycete fungus Hydnoporia yasudae. This pathogen belongs to the group of wood-decaying fungi that contribute to the development of destructive wood rot. While it functions as a decomposer in natural ecosystems, in forestry and horticulture, it is considered a dangerous agent that reduces the timber quality and biological stability of trees.
The primary hosts for this fungus are deciduous tree species, particularly those in the beech family and other broad-leaved types. The pathogen typically enters the tree through mechanical injuries to the bark, frost cracks, broken branches, or pruning cuts, making trees with weakened immunity particularly susceptible to infection.
The symptoms of infection appear as the formation of specific fruiting bodies on the trunks and branches of infected plants. These structures often feature a characteristic hydnoid (spine-like) hymenophore surface. Over time, the wood in the affected area alters its structure, becomes brittle, and loses mechanical strength, eventually leading to premature branch dieback and the death of the entire tree.
The development of the disease is closely linked to high air humidity and the temperature regimes of temperate climates. Fungal spores are dispersed by wind currents or insects, settling on exposed wood surfaces. Favorable conditions for the intensive spread of the pathogen include dense plantings, poor air circulation, and the presence of open wounds through which the mycelium can easily penetrate deep into the plant tissues.
Control measures involve a complex of sanitary practices. First and foremost, it is essential to promptly remove and dispose of infected specimens through sanitation logging. To prevent primary infection, it is crucial to perform correct pruning techniques, treat cuts with grafting wax or fungicides, and maintain the overall health of the trees through proper fertilization and pest control to prevent bark damage.
