The genus Hydnotrya consists of ascomycetous fungi that predominantly inhabit forest soils. While often associated with mycorrhizal structures, certain species can behave as opportunistic pathogens under agricultural conditions. These fungi are characterized by hypogeous (underground) fruiting bodies and can persist in the soil environment for extended periods as saprotrophs before infecting host plants.
The pathogen thrives in high-moisture environments and is often associated with poorly aerated, compacted soils. The infection process begins when fungal hyphae come into contact with root exudates of susceptible plants, leading to the penetration of cortical tissues. Once established, the pathogen interferes with nutrient and water transport, causing physiological stress to the host.
Target crops primarily include forest nurseries, ornamental shrubs, and occasionally high-value orchard stocks. Plants experiencing physiological stress or those with compromised root integrity due to soil-dwelling pests are significantly more susceptible to infection. The disease often manifests during the seedling stage, leading to poor establishment rates in the field.
Key symptoms include stunting, chlorosis of the foliage, and wilting during peak daylight hours. Careful examination of the roots reveals browning and tissue necrosis. In some cases, white fungal mycelia may be visible surrounding the roots, which acts as a diagnostic indicator. Persistent infections typically result in root system decay, eventually killing the host.
Management of this fungus requires a multifaceted approach focused on soil health and environment modification. Reducing soil moisture levels and improving structural drainage are critical steps in inhibiting fungal growth. Preventive strategies are much more effective than curative actions, as fungal pathogens within the soil profile are difficult to eradicate completely.
