Hydnotrya confusa is a species of ascomycete fungus that, while primarily saprotrophic, can exhibit opportunistic pathogenic behavior in specific soil environments. It is often found in forest nurseries and moist soil habitats, where it can interfere with the nutrient uptake of seedling roots, leading to reduced vigor and stunted growth in host plants.

The fungus typically affects nursery-grown seedlings and young trees, particularly those in damp, unsterilized soil environments. It thrives by colonizing the root zone, where it creates a physical barrier or disrupts the symbiotic relationship between the plant roots and beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, thereby weakening the plant's overall health.

Symptoms of infestation are often subtle in the early stages, making identification challenging. Affected plants typically show signs of stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and general wilting despite adequate watering. Upon closer examination of the root system, a gardener may observe a white or greyish fungal mycelium and abnormal root thickening that indicates a parasitic presence.

It proliferates rapidly in poorly drained soils and environments with low oxygen levels (hypoxia).
