Description

Hygrophoropsis is a genus of fungi primarily studied in the context of forest mycology rather than as a primary plant disease. The most prominent species, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca (often known as the false chanterelle), acts as a saprotroph. In forestry and arboriculture, it is not considered a virulent pathogen, but rather an indicator of organic matter decomposition within the forest soil or on decaying woody debris.

The causative agent belongs to the family Hygrophoropsidaceae. As a saprotrophic organism, its biological mechanism involves the enzymatic breakdown of lignin and cellulose found in dead plants. It does not actively infect healthy, vigorous tissue; instead, it colonizes decaying wood, needles, and mulch, contributing to the formation of soil humus. It functions by absorbing nutrients from already dead plant cells.

This fungus typically targets coniferous tree species, particularly pine and spruce. It thrives in environments with high moisture levels, low light, and significant needle litter accumulation. In intensive agricultural settings, it is rarely a problem. However, in forest nurseries or agroforestry systems, the presence of its mycelium on tree bases may suggest poor drainage or the accumulation of excessive rotting wood, which can create a moist microclimate conducive to other root-rotting pathogens.

Symptoms of its presence include the growth of orange to brownish-orange fruiting bodies, often clustered at the base of trees or on logs. While the fungus itself is generally harmless, its proliferation is a clear sign that the tree or its immediate environment may be suffering from excess moisture or decaying organic matter, which can potentially inhibit root respiration and nutrient uptake in susceptible young trees.

Management and prevention measures are generally not required unless the goal is purely aesthetic or strictly sanitary. To limit the conditions under which such fungi thrive, one should focus on environmental control:

  • removal of old, decaying stumps and woody debris;
  • ensuring adequate soil drainage to prevent waterlogging;
  • regular monitoring of tree health to detect early signs of stress;
  • maintaining aeration around the root collar of trees.
