Hymenelia is a genus of lichenized fungi that colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. Within the agricultural context, while not a parasitic pathogen in the strict sense, heavy colonization by these organisms is considered a harmful condition that disrupts the biological balance of the host plant and necessitates intervention for orchard maintenance.

The biological nature of Hymenelia involves a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and algae. As an epiphytic organism, it derives nutrients from the air and rain rather than directly from the host plant's tissues. However, by covering the bark, it creates an insulating layer that interferes with the tree's gas exchange through the lenticels.

The host range of Hymenelia primarily includes mature fruit trees such as apples, pears, and various ornamental species. It tends to favor older specimens with rough, fissured bark which provides an ideal substrate for the lichen to establish itself, especially in neglected or unmanaged plantations.

Symptoms of infestation are manifested as distinct patches or crusts on the trunks and main branches, typically gray or off-white in appearance. These patches create a micro-habitat that traps moisture, which in turn can lead to bark rot and provides shelter for various overwintering pests, further compromising tree vigor.

Developmental conditions are heavily reliant on high humidity, low sunlight penetration, and stagnant air within the canopy. Effective management strategies involve physical removal of the lichen with specialized tools, pruning to increase air circulation, and the application of trunk washes to alter the surface pH, thereby inhibiting further growth.
