These fungi typically affect woody plants, including deciduous and coniferous species. In agricultural and arboricultural practice, fruit trees such as apples, pears, and various nut-bearing species are particularly susceptible. The infection usually begins when fungal spores land on exposed wood, such as pruning wounds or bark cracks.
