Description

The order Hymenochaetales comprises a group of fungi known primarily as wood-decay agents. These fungi are classified as xylotrophs, which colonize and break down the woody tissues of trees. In agriculture and forestry, they are significant as they cause white rots, compromising the structural integrity of trunks and branches over time.

These fungi affect a wide range of host plants, including various fruit trees like apples, pears, and plums, as well as many forest species. The pathogen enters the host through compromised bark, pruning wounds, sunscald injuries, or mechanical damage, where the spores germinate and initiate the colonization of the xylem.

Symptoms of an infection often include the visible presence of fungal sporocarps on the bark, which can appear as bracket-like, crust-like, or hoof-shaped structures. Internally, the wood loses its hardness, changes color to a lighter, bleached appearance, and eventually becomes fibrous or crumbly, significantly weakening the plant's structural support.

The development and spread of Hymenochaetales are highly dependent on moisture levels and temperature. Fungal spores are dispersed by wind or rain splash and land on susceptible areas of the tree. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the woody tissue, slowly digesting the structural components of the tree's vascular system.

The impact of these pathogens is substantial, often leading to tree collapse or long-term decline in productivity. To prevent and manage these infections, growers should focus on maintaining tree health and minimizing entry points for the fungus. Essential protective measures include clean pruning cuts, immediate sealing of large wounds with specialized dressings, prompt removal of infected wood, and avoiding excessive irrigation that increases humidity around the stems.
