As a wood-decay fungus, it exhibits both parasitic and saprotrophic characteristics, often targeting weakened or mature specimens in humid forest environments. Its biological impact on tree health is significant, as it interferes with the vital cambium layers.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include alder species (such as Alnus incana) and hazelnuts. It typically colonizes the stem or larger structural branches, finding entry points through mechanical wounds, frost cracks, or sunscald. Once established, the mycelium spreads within the bark, gradually leading to the disintegration of structural integrity and increasing the tree's susceptibility to secondary pests and environmental stressors.
