Hymenochaete corrugata is a specialized wood-decay fungus belonging to the Hymenochaetaceae family. It is recognized as a pathogen responsible for cortical necrosis and the degradation of woody tissues in various broad-leaved trees. It typically acts as a wound parasite, exploiting areas where the tree's natural defenses have been compromised.

The fungus commonly infects a wide range of host plants, including species such as hazel, oak, birch, and various other deciduous trees. While it is frequently found on dead or decaying branches, it can encroach upon living tissues when the host is stressed due to environmental factors, shading, or physical injury, potentially leading to branch dieback.

Symptoms are identified by the appearance of thin, crust-like, leathery sporocarps on the bark surface. These growths typically feature a rusty-brown or dark-red hue and develop a distinct, wrinkled, or corrugated texture as they mature. Beneath these formations, the bark usually dries out and peels away, revealing underlying decay in the sapwood.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of this disease. High humidity levels and prolonged periods of wet weather provide optimal conditions for spore production and mycelial growth. The pathogen spreads primarily through wind-borne spores that settle into bark fissures or wounds caused by pruning, storms, or pest activity.

Regular inspection of the canopy, prompt removal and destruction of infected wood through burning, and the application of protective treatments to pruning wounds are key.
