Hymenogaster vulgaris is a soil-dwelling fungus of the Hymenogastraceae family, which is often encountered in agricultural environments as a component of the rhizosphere ecosystem. While it is primarily a mycorrhizal fungus, under specific conditions of soil imbalance, it can negatively affect the physiological status of cultivated plants.

The pathogen thrives in underground layers, forming complex mycelial networks. In an agronomic context, the disease development is considered a manifestation of symbiotic disruption where the fungus ceases to provide nutrients to the host plant and instead creates competition for resources, leading to the overall weakening of the root system.

Commonly affected crops include fruit tree seedlings and ornamental shrub nurseries. The visible symptoms of infestation are characterized by yellowing of foliage (chlorosis), stunted shoot growth, and a reduction in root density.
