Description

Hyphoderma is a genus of basidiomycetous fungi characterized by its crust-like (corticoid) fruit bodies. While the majority of species within this genus act as saprotrophs, contributing to the decomposition of dead wood and nutrient cycling, some species have the potential to colonize living trees. These fungi typically act as secondary pathogens, exploiting existing weaknesses, wounds, or stressed tissue in a wide variety of host trees.

The host range for these fungi is quite broad, encompassing numerous deciduous and coniferous species. Once the fungus enters the host, usually through bark wounds, pruning scars, or winter injury, it begins to colonize the wood tissues. This colonization can lead to structural decay, compromising the long-term health of the plant and predisposing it to failure or secondary infestations by wood-boring insects.

The primary clinical signs of Hyphoderma infestation are the presence of thin, film-like, or web-like fungal mats on the bark surface. These fructifications range in color from pure white to yellow or buff. Internally, the infection often manifests as a progressive rot. As the mycelium degrades lignin and cellulose, the wood loses its tensile strength, often becoming discolored, brittle, or pithy, which is a hallmark of white rot development.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination and establishment of Hyphoderma. High humidity, poor air circulation, and cool to moderate temperatures create the optimal environment for spore germination and mycelial growth. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind currents and water splashes, while insects may serve as vectors, transporting the fungus from decaying logs to healthy but stressed trees in the vicinity.

Integrated management is essential for controlling fungal decay. Prevention focuses on minimizing the host's susceptibility:

  • Conducting regular crown thinning to improve air circulation.
  • Applying proper pruning techniques to minimize large wounds.
  • Treating mechanical damage immediately with protective sealants or fungicides.
  • Removing and destroying heavily infected wood debris to reduce the inoculum load.
