Description

Hyphodontia is a genus of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the family Schizoporaceae. In agricultural and forestry contexts, these fungi are recognized as wood decay pathogens responsible for white rot. They function primarily by colonizing dead wood, but they can act as opportunistic pathogens, invading living tissues of trees through various types of wounds, ultimately causing significant structural degradation of the host plant.

These fungi typically affect a wide range of hardwood tree species, including various fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. The pathogen is often found in older orchards or forests where trees have been compromised by environmental stress, mechanical damage, or poor pruning practices. By breaking down lignin and cellulose, the fungus severely impacts the tree's vascular integrity and overall stability.

The primary symptom of a Hyphodontia infection is the appearance of fungal fruiting bodies, which appear as thin, crust-like, or porous layers on the bark or exposed wood, often ranging in color from white to cream. Internally, the wood becomes soft, discolored, and lightened in texture, which is a classic indicator of white rot. Over time, affected branches become brittle, leading to dieback and a significant decrease in the tree's fruit production.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on humidity levels and the availability of infection courts. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind, rain splash, or through contaminated pruning tools, landing on exposed wounds, cracks, or frost-damaged bark. Once colonized, the mycelium penetrates deep into the sapwood, creating a self-sustaining infection that is difficult to eradicate without physical removal of the diseased tissue.

Effective management and prevention of Hyphodontia require a proactive approach to tree health and orchard hygiene.

  • Conduct regular sanitary pruning to remove dead or infected wood.
