Hyphodontia sambuci is a fungal species belonging to the Hyphodontiaceae family, known for causing white rot in wood. While it frequently acts as a saprotroph living on dead organic matter, it can manifest as a secondary pathogen, impacting the vitality of trees and shrubs that are already weakened by environmental stress or physical injuries.
The fungus affects a broad range of hardwood species and ornamental shrubs. Common hosts include elderberry, lilac, maple, willow, and various fruit trees like apple or plum. Vulnerability is highest when trees are subjected to frost cracks, pruning wounds, or severe infestation by wood-boring insects, providing an entry point for the mycelium.
The visual symptoms appear as thin, white to cream-colored crusts on the surface of the bark or dead wood. As the infection progresses, the fungal mats may develop a granular or velvety texture. Internally, the wood becomes brittle and bleached, displaying the classic symptoms of white rot, where both lignin and cellulose are gradually broken down by fungal enzymes.
Development of Hyphodontia sambuci is highly favored by environments with high humidity, stagnant air, and long periods of moisture. The spores are primarily wind-dispersed, settling on wounded tissues where they germinate. Dense plantings and lack of proper canopy management significantly increase the likelihood of the fungus becoming established within a garden or orchard.
Management and prevention focus on maintaining the structural integrity of the trees and reducing fungal inoculum. Key measures include the prompt removal and disposal of infected branches, sealing all significant pruning wounds, and improving air circulation through proper thinning of the crown. Keeping the garden clear of decaying wood reduces the potential source of spores, significantly lowering the risk of infection for healthy plants.
