The genus Hypholoma, commonly known as sulfur tufts or false honey mushrooms, includes species that act as opportunistic pathogens on trees. While frequently occurring as saprotrophs, these fungi are capable of attacking the woody tissues of weakened plants, leading to severe decay and significantly impacting the health and longevity of both ornamental and fruit trees.
The disease is primarily caused by basidiomycete fungi, with Hypholoma fasciculare being the most notable species. It functions as a wood-decay pathogen that targets the cambium and xylem. Once the fungus enters the host through wounds, pruning cuts, or root abrasions, it initiates the breakdown of wood components, effectively compromising the structural integrity of the plant.
Susceptible crops include a wide range of broad-leaved and coniferous trees, as well as various fruit-bearing species. Trees suffering from environmental stress, poor nutrition, or previous injuries are the primary targets. The pathogen is particularly dangerous in orchards where decaying stumps provide a permanent habitat for the fungus to spread to adjacent healthy trees.
Key symptoms and signs of the disease include:
- Formation of characteristic mushroom clusters at the base of the trunk or on exposed roots.
- Discoloration and softening of the internal wood, often accompanied by black zone lines.
- General decline in tree vigor, characterized by stunted growth and sparse foliage.
- Increased susceptibility to structural failure or windfall due to compromised root systems.
Environmental conditions conducive to the development of Hypholoma include high soil moisture, poor drainage, and persistent humidity. The fungus spreads via basidiospores carried by wind and through rhizomorphs or direct root-to-root contact between infected and healthy trees. A warm, humid climate accelerates the colonization process within the host's woody tissues.
Management and prevention strategies focus on maintaining tree vigor and strict sanitary practices. It is crucial to remove stumps and deadwood, as these serve as primary sources of inoculum. Any mechanical damage to trees must be avoided, and pruning cuts should be sealed promptly. If infection is detected, affected tissue should be excised, and the area treated with protective fungicides to halt the progression of the rot.
