Sulfur tuft (Latin: Hypholoma fasciculare) is a prominent wood-decaying fungus that acts as a facultative parasite in woody plants. While primarily a saprotroph, in an agricultural context, it is recognized as a serious threat to fruit orchards and ornamental trees, causing significant internal structural degradation.
The fungus targets a wide range of broad-leaved and coniferous species. In managed environments, it is particularly dangerous to aged or compromised trees, utilizing wounds from pruning, frost cracks, or pest damage to gain entry into the host's vascular system and heartwood.
The primary diagnostic symptom is the emergence of clusters of distinctive, sulfur-yellow mushrooms on the base of tree trunks or roots. Internally, the fungus secretes enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose, resulting in a yellow-brown, brittle rot that compromises the physical integrity of the tree.
Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius are optimal for the growth and sporulation of the fungus. Spores are efficiently disseminated by wind and rain, infecting new hosts through exposed bark or dead wood sections.
The impact of Hypholoma fasciculare is significant, as it restricts nutrient and water transport within the tree, leading to canopy dieback and reduced yield. In advanced stages, the decay of the root and buttress system creates a severe risk of the tree collapsing during adverse weather events.
