Description
Hypoderma is a genus of ascomycete fungi known to cause significant pathogenic diseases in plants, particularly affecting needles of conifer trees. These fungi act as parasites, colonizing the plant tissue and utilizing its nutrients, which often results in severe foliage damage and stunted tree growth.
The causal agent spreads via airborne spores. The life cycle typically involves the infection of healthy foliage during periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures. Once the fungal mycelium penetrates the needles, it begins to colonize the host tissue internally, preparing for the formation of fruiting bodies that will disseminate new spores.
The primary hosts of Hypoderma are various pine species. The disease poses a significant threat to forest ecosystems, ornamental plantings, and forest nurseries. Young trees are particularly susceptible, as a single season of heavy infection can severely compromise their survival rate and structural development.
Symptoms of the infection include the premature chlorosis and subsequent necrosis of needles. The needles turn from green to yellow and then brown before falling off. Diagnostic features include the presence of elongated, black, flat apothecia that rupture the needle epidermis, which is a key indicator for identification in field conditions.
Effective management requires a combination of silvicultural practices and chemical treatments. Sanitation is the most crucial preventive measure, which involves removing and destroying infected debris to lower the inoculum pressure. Prophylactic application of fungicides during the primary infection period is essential for high-value seedlings and trees.
