Hypoderma labiorum-aurantiorum
Description
The causal agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Hypoderma labiorum. It is a highly specialized pathogen that specifically targets the needles of various species within the Abies genus. The disease is characterized by necrotic lesions and premature shedding of needles, significantly affecting the tree's vitality.
The disease primarily affects fir trees, including the Siberian fir and European fir. It poses a significant threat to nurseries and young forest plantations, where environmental conditions often promote rapid spread of fungal spores among dense host populations.
Symptoms initially appear as yellowing or browning of the needles. As the disease progresses, distinctive black, elongated, lip-like fruiting bodies (apothecia) appear on the underside of the needles. These structures eventually rupture, releasing spores that continue the infection cycle on healthy needles or nearby trees.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity, heavy rainfall, and cool temperatures are critical for the development and dispersal of Hypoderma labiorum. The fungus overwinters in shed needles on the forest floor, which act as a reservoir for infection during the next growing season.
Management strategies focus on reducing inoculum and improving tree resistance. Important measures include:
- Sanitation by removing and destroying fallen infected needles.
- Spacing trees appropriately to increase air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
- Applying fungicide treatments during the spring when spores are active.
- Monitoring nursery stock regularly for early signs of yellowing.
