These fungi are obligate parasites that specifically target the needles of conifer trees. As a type of needle cast disease, it interferes with the photosynthetic ability of the tree by causing premature chlorosis and subsequent necrosis of the needles.

Host plants and distribution: This disease primarily affects species within the Pinus genus, including Scots pine and various ornamental or commercial pine varieties. It is a widespread issue in both forest stands and nurseries, particularly in regions with temperate climates where cool, moist conditions prevail throughout the spring and early summer seasons.

Symptoms and signs: The most prominent symptom is the browning or reddening of current-year needles. As the disease progresses, small, dark brown or black hysterothecia (fruiting bodies) develop along the midrib of the needle. These signs are diagnostic, distinguishing it from other needle-blight diseases. Affected needles often fall off prematurely, resulting in sparse, thin-looking crowns.

Conditions for development and severity: The fungus thrives in humid environments, especially during seasons with prolonged wet weather and moderate temperatures. The severity of the disease is exacerbated by poor site selection, such as planting in low-lying areas with stagnant air, and dense stand management. Repeated annual infections can lead to significant growth suppression and, in extreme cases, the mortality of seedlings and young saplings.
