Hypogymnia is a genus of foliose lichens that often settle on the bark of trees and shrubs. In agricultural practice, they are not classified as pathogens, but rather as epiphytic organisms that indicate a lack of proper orchard maintenance. While they do not consume the tree's sap, their excessive presence is a visual sign of an unhealthy or aging tree environment.

These lichens commonly affect a wide range of fruit trees, including apples, pears, and stone fruits. They thrive on the trunks and main branches, forming distinct rosettes with inflated, hollow lobes. Their color varies from light grey to greenish-brown, depending on the moisture level and the specific species of the lichen.

The primary symptom is the appearance of leathery, lobed thalli covering the bark. While the lichen itself does not actively destroy the tree, its physical presence can inhibit bark respiration and create micro-environments that trap moisture. This high humidity under the lichen cover often leads to the development of rot, fungi, and provides an ideal habitat for overwintering pests.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Hypogymnia include high ambient humidity, poor air circulation in the orchard, and stagnant conditions. Trees with slow growth rates, damaged bark, or those lacking sufficient sunlight are the primary candidates for colonization. A neglected orchard with high humidity levels almost inevitably becomes a target for lichen growth.

Effective control and prevention strategies focus on improving tree vigor and maintaining clean bark:

  • Mechanical removal of lichens using soft brushes or plastic scrapers during the dormant season.
  • Regular whitewashing of trunks using lime-based mixtures to discourage colonization.
  • Implementation of regular pruning to ensure proper sunlight penetration and airflow.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides if the lichen presence is severe or associated with other diseases.
