Hypomyces

Hypomyces is a genus of fungi belonging to the Hypocreaceae family, known for being specialized mycoparasites. While some species are famous for their symbiotic-like interactions in nature, in agricultural mushroom farming, they are considered destructive pathogens that can severely impact the quality and yield of commercial crops.

The causative agent of the disease is a group of ascomycetes that infect other fungi. These pathogens penetrate the host tissue, extracting nutrients and disrupting the metabolic processes, which prevents the host from developing normally or leads to its complete decay.

Commercial mushroom farms are the primary environment where this disease causes economic losses. Species like white button mushrooms or oyster mushrooms are particularly susceptible to Hypomyces outbreaks, especially in conditions where sanitation protocols are compromised or air circulation is insufficient.

Symptoms of infection include the appearance of a dusty, white, yellow, or reddish coating covering the mushroom surface. Infected specimens often exhibit severe malformation, stunted growth, and a significant loss of marketability, as the tissue integrity is degraded by the penetrating fungal hyphae.

Protection strategies focus on rigorous environmental control and hygiene. Preventing the introduction of spores through air filters, maintaining strict humidity levels, and ensuring that the substrate is thoroughly pasteurized are key defensive measures. Any infected substrate must be removed immediately to prevent secondary spread via airborne spores.
