Hypomyces deformans is a specialized mycophilic fungus belonging to the Ascomycota division. It functions as a parasite that exclusively infects the fruiting bodies of other fungal species, most notably those within the Lactarius and Russula genera, causing distinct developmental abnormalities.

The nature of this disease is fundamentally different from typical plant pathogens because the host organism is itself a fungus. Hypomyces deformans infiltrates the host's tissues at an early stage, intercepting nutrient flow and redirecting it towards its own reproductive cycles, which halts the normal growth of the host.
