Hypomyces rosellus is a parasitic fungus recognized in agronomy as the causative agent of "rose mold" or "cobweb disease" symptoms in mushroom production. It specifically attacks cultivated mushroom species, causing significant economic losses by colonizing the substrate and destroying emerging fruit bodies.
The disease is classified as a myco-pathological infection. The pathogen behaves as a hyper-parasite, infecting the mycelium of the host fungus. By secreting enzymes that break down the host tissue, the fungus efficiently redirects nutrients to support its own rapid vegetative growth and subsequent sporulation.
The primary diagnostic symptoms include the appearance of a whitish, cobweb-like mycelium that rapidly spreads over the casing soil or the mushroom surface. As the colony matures, the characteristic pink coloration emerges, which gives the disease its common name. The affected mushrooms eventually soften and decompose, emitting a distinct, unpleasant odor.
The pathogen thrives under conditions of high humidity and poor ventilation, which are unfortunately common in mushroom houses. Spores are easily disseminated via contaminated air, dirty tools, or sub-standard casing materials. High temperatures within the range of 20°C to 25°C accelerate the spread, making rapid detection essential for containment.
