Buxus leaf spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Hyponectria buxi, is a common and destructive condition affecting boxwood plants (Buxus spp.). This fungus is a host-specific parasite that thrives in environments where boxwoods are densely planted and lack sufficient air circulation.
The disease is characterized by the formation of yellowish to brown spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots darken and may develop small, black, pinhead-sized fruiting bodies known as perithecia. These structures are visible on the surface of the infected leaves and serve as a diagnostic indicator of the pathogen's presence.
The development of Hyponectria buxi is heavily dependent on moisture. Wet weather conditions combined with high humidity create the ideal environment for fungal spores to germinate and infect healthy foliage.
