Description

The family Hypoxylaceae consists of ascomycetous fungi that primarily inhabit woody substrates. While they generally function as saprotrophs contributing to forest nutrient cycling, certain species act as opportunistic pathogens that contribute to wood decay, especially in trees already weakened by environmental stress or physical injuries.

These fungi typically affect a wide variety of deciduous tree species, including oak, beech, birch, and various fruit-bearing trees. Their pathogenic activity is most pronounced in habitats where trees suffer from drought, soil compaction, or high pest pressure, which compromises the tree's natural defense mechanisms.

Visible symptoms include the presence of distinct fungal stromata that erupt through the bark surface. These structures appear as crusty, dark, or carbonaceous patches. Internally, the fungus degrades lignin and cellulose, leading to a bleached, fibrous wood texture known as white rot, which significantly reduces the structural integrity of the wood.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and the availability of infection courts such as pruning wounds, cracks, or frost damages. Spores are disseminated by air currents, splashing rain, or wood-boring insects, allowing the fungus to colonize both dead wood and compromised living tissues.

Management strategies focus on long-term prevention and sanitation. It is essential to maintain tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrition. Regular monitoring of the orchard or forest stand for signs of infection is critical. Infected branches should be pruned promptly, and all equipment used must be sanitized to prevent the spread of fungal propagules.
