Description
Hypoxylon is a genus of ascomycetous fungi responsible for causing severe diseases in trees, commonly referred to as Hypoxylon canker or wood rot. These fungi primarily act as opportunists, colonizing trees that have been weakened by environmental stressors, mechanical injury, or secondary pest infestations.
A wide variety of hardwood trees can be affected, including oak, beech, birch, and fruit-bearing species. The fungus targets the cambium layer and the sapwood, systematically disrupting the tree's vascular system and nutrient transport, which often leads to the death of the host plant if the infection remains unchecked.
The most visible signs of infection include sloughing off of the outer bark, revealing the characteristic stroma of the fungus. These stromata typically appear as crust-like, blackened, or greyish-brown patches on the surface of the trunk or branches. Internally, the wood becomes brittle and develops a distinct mottled pattern, losing its structural integrity.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity and frequent rainfall facilitate the dispersal of fungal spores. The disease spreads when spores land on fresh wounds, frost cracks, or sites where limbs have been broken by wind or heavy snow. Once the mycelium establishes itself within the host, it continues to spread, eventually girdling the branch or the entire trunk.
Control measures are primarily focused on preventative management rather than curative chemical treatments. Promoting overall tree vigor through proper irrigation, mulching, and avoiding soil compaction is essential. Infected trees or dead branches should be pruned promptly and destroyed, while tools must be sanitized to prevent the mechanical transmission of the pathogen to healthy specimens.
