Description
The genus Hypsizygus comprises basidiomycete fungi that primarily act as wood-decaying agents. In an agronomic context, these fungi are recognized as pathogens that threaten the health of live trees by invading the vascular and structural tissues, ultimately causing white rot which compromises the longevity of the host plant.
The disease is initiated when spores or mycelial fragments infect a tree through wounds, pruning cuts, or structural damage caused by environmental factors. The fungus functions as a white-rot agent, secreting enzymes that decompose lignin and cellulose, which are the primary structural components of wood, leading to severe decay inside the trunk.
Fruit-bearing species, including apple and pear trees, are most commonly targeted by this organism. Trees that are already stressed due to poor soil fertility, water logging, or lack of proper pruning are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungus compared to vigorous, healthy specimens.
Visible symptoms include the emergence of fungal fruiting bodies on the trunk or large branches. Internally, the wood loses its density and structural integrity, becoming spongy and fibrous. This weakening often makes the tree hazardous, as branches may snap under their own weight or during strong winds, posing a risk to both the orchard's yield and the tree's survival.
- Implement strict pruning sanitation by cleaning tools between uses.
- Apply high-quality wound sealants to any exposed wood after cutting.
- Monitor the orchard for signs of bark cracks or insect infestation that might invite fungal spores.
- Remove and destroy severely infected trees to eliminate the source of further spore dispersal.
Hypsizygus thrives in moist, shaded environments, spreading via wind-dispersed spores. Because systemic chemical cures for internal wood rot are largely unavailable, prevention is the only viable strategy. Maintaining optimal tree vitality and promptly sealing physical damages are the most effective measures to prevent long-term establishment of the fungus.
