Description
The Hypsostromataceae family comprises a group of ascomycetous fungi recognized as significant plant pathogens. These organisms primarily affect woody plants, causing structural and physiological damage to the bark and underlying cambium layers, which disrupts the normal development of the host plant.
The pathogen thrives by developing stromatic structures that emerge through the plant's surface. As a necrotrophic pathogen, it actively kills host cells, leading to localized or systemic tissue death. This process of degradation compromises the plant's structural integrity and its ability to transport nutrients and water from roots to leaves.
A variety of broadleaf trees are susceptible to these fungal infections. The pathogen typically gains entry through entry points like pruning cuts, winter frost cracks, or wounds caused by insect feeding. Once established, the fungus can persist in the bark for several years, gradually expanding its necrotic zone.
Diagnostic symptoms are often visible on the trunks and major branches. Gardeners and foresters should look for darkened, sunken patches of bark, longitudinal cracking, and the presence of small, dark, pimple-like fruiting bodies. In advanced cases, the foliage above the infection site will wither and drop prematurely.
Favorable conditions for growth include cool, damp weather and high atmospheric humidity. These factors facilitate the production and release of fungal spores, which are then disseminated by rainfall splash and wind gusts to nearby susceptible hosts, leading to rapid disease spread in dense plantations.
Management and prevention strategies include:
- Strict sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected limbs.
- Applying protective wound dressings to all major cuts to prevent spore colonization.
- Conducting dormant-season applications of copper-based fungicides.
- Improving plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to strengthen natural defenses.
