The biological nature of these fungi involves the formation of ectomycorrhiza with tree roots. By colonizing the root tips, Hysterangiales species facilitate the exchange of water and mineral nutrients, such as phosphorus, in exchange for photosynthetic carbon compounds provided by the host plant.
