Hysterium is a genus of ascomycete fungi known to cause specific tissue diseases in various woody plants. While these fungi often function as saprotrophs living on dead organic matter, they can act as opportunistic pathogens under certain conditions, colonizing the stems and bark of weakened plants. The disease affects the integrity of the plant's surface tissues.

The causal agents are fungi belonging to the genus Hysterium. The disease is classified as a surface necrosis type. It typically targets various coniferous and broad-leaved species, especially those that are suffering from environmental stress, insect damage, or physical wounding, which provides entry points for the fungal mycelium to colonize.

Key symptoms of infection include the development of black, elongated, slit-like structures known as hysterothecia on the bark. In advanced stages, the surrounding bark tissue may become discolored, brittle, and cracked. If left untreated, the continuous growth of the fungus can cause significant dieback of branches and limbs.

Development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and rainfall. The spores produced within the hysterothecia are dispersed by wind and splashing water. Once they land on a susceptible substrate, they germinate rapidly if moisture levels remain sufficient, establishing new infection sites.

The economic impact of the disease relates to the loss of plant vigor, reduced aesthetic value of ornamental trees, and the potential for larger-scale branch mortality. Management strategies focus on sanitation, such as removing infected material, and improving tree health through proper irrigation and nutrition. Fungicidal applications may be necessary in nurseries or high-value landscapes to prevent new outbreaks.
