The fungus is known to attack a variety of hardwood species. It colonizes the bark and outer sapwood, drawing nutrients from decaying organic matter. In intensive agricultural settings, if the sanitation protocol is neglected, this fungus can become widespread, occupying the ecological niche created by dying wood tissues.

The primary symptom of Hysterium angustatum is the development of distinct black, elongated fruiting bodies known as hysterothecia.
