Hysterographium is a genus of ascomycetous fungi known to colonize the bark and wood of various woody plants. While these fungi are often considered saprotrophic, thriving on dead organic matter, they can behave as opportunistic pathogens, causing significant damage to weakened or stressed trees. Their presence is frequently associated with long-term decline in plant health.

A wide variety of deciduous trees are susceptible to this fungus, with ash and oak species being particularly common hosts. The pathogen targets branches that have been compromised by environmental factors such as severe frost, drought, or mechanical damage. In managed nurseries and ornamental gardens, the presence of these fungi can detract from the aesthetic value and structural integrity of the plants.

The primary symptom of infection is the emergence of distinctive, black, slit-like fruiting bodies known as hysterothecia on the bark surface. These structures appear in clusters and are indicative of the fungus's reproductive phase. As the infestation progresses, the affected bark may necrotize, split, or flake off, exposing the underlying wood, which often exhibits dark staining as a sign of decay.

The spread of Hysterographium is primarily mediated by spores dispersed through wind and splashing rain. High humidity levels and prolonged periods of wet weather are critical for the successful germination and establishment of the fungus. Shaded areas with poor airflow are particularly prone to outbreaks, as the bark remains damp for longer periods, providing the fungus with a conducive environment to thrive.

Controlling this fungal disease requires a combination of sanitation and supportive cultural practices to improve overall plant vigor. Key management strategies include the following:

  • Conducting regular pruning to remove infected or dead wood, ensuring tools are sterilized between cuts.
  • Applying protective wound dressings to large bark injuries to prevent fungal entry.
  • Promoting healthy tree growth through balanced irrigation and fertilization to minimize stress.
  • Using copper-based fungicides in early spring to prevent the initial settlement of spores on susceptible bark.
