Description
The causative agent of this disease is the soil-borne fungus Ilyonectria destructans (formerly Cylindrocarpon destructans). This pathogen is widely distributed in agricultural soils and acts as a parasitic organism that targets the root tissues, leading to systemic decay and vascular dysfunction in susceptible plants.
This pathogen has a broad host range, causing significant economic loss in various crops. It is particularly notorious for causing 'rusty rot' in ginseng plantations, but it also heavily impacts fruit tree nurseries, strawberries, and a variety of ornamental species grown in greenhouse conditions or high-humidity environments.
The visual symptoms of the disease are characterized by brown or black necrotic lesions appearing on the roots and root collars. As the infection progresses, the tissues become friable and decay, leading to stunted shoot growth, leaf chlorosis, and general wilting. Without intervention, the entire root system may collapse, resulting in total crop failure.
Environmental conditions such as high soil moisture, poor drainage, and cool temperatures are ideal for the rapid development of Ilyonectria destructans. The fungus produces chlamydospores that allow it to persist in the soil for extended periods, making it a persistent threat that is difficult to eradicate once it is established in a field.
