Ilyonectria liriodendri is a significant fungal pathogen known primarily for causing black foot disease in grapevines and various root rot complexes in other woody plants. This fungus acts by infecting the root system and the base of the trunk, leading to the destruction of vascular tissues and eventual systemic decline of the host plant.
The host range of this pathogen includes grapevines, tulip trees, and various ornamental species. Being a soil-borne fungus, it possesses the ability to survive in the soil for several years through the formation of chlamydospores. This longevity makes it a persistent challenge for nurseries and vineyard owners, as it can easily contaminate new plantings.
Symptoms of the infection often include stunting of shoots, small chlorotic leaves, and a general loss of vigor. Upon closer inspection of the root system, one can observe necrotic lesions, darkened tissues, and decaying lateral roots.
