As a pathogen, it belongs to the Hymenochaetaceae family and is known for its ability to cause significant stem rot, leading to the structural weakening of the host tree and potential failure of limbs or the main trunk.
The fungus is widely distributed across various urban environments and forests, commonly infecting species such as maple, sycamore, locust, and certain fruit trees. Its host range is quite broad, making it a serious concern for arborists, municipal landscape managers, and foresters who are responsible for maintaining public safety and tree health.
Diagnostic symptoms of an Inonotus rickii infection often include the presence of conspicuous, crust-like or cushion-shaped asexual fruiting bodies that range in color from yellowish-brown to dark rusty brown. As the infection progresses, the wood loses its tensile strength, and the tree may exhibit sunken lesions, bark cracks, and canopy dieback.
