Description
Inonotus triqueter is a destructive wood-decaying fungus responsible for severe root and butt rot in coniferous trees. This pathogen belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum and significantly impacts forest health by infiltrating the tree’s root system and decaying the internal woody tissues, which leads to structural instability.
The primary hosts for this fungus include various pine species, most notably the Scots pine. The fungus typically enters the tree through wounds in the bark, damaged roots, or physical injuries caused by logging equipment, storms, or foraging wildlife. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the heartwood.
Key symptoms include the emergence of fruiting bodies at the base of the trunk or on exposed roots, noticeable needle discoloration, and a decline in tree vigor. As the rot progresses, it compromises the tree’s structural integrity, eventually leading to windthrow or complete collapse of the infected timber.
Development and spread are facilitated by moist soil conditions and the presence of open wounds on the tree. The fungus propagates through airborne spores and the physical contact of root systems between neighboring trees in the forest stand, allowing it to create "pockets" of infection that slowly expand over time.
The economic and ecological impact of this pathogen is substantial, as it reduces timber quality and shortens the lifespan of mature forest stands. Effective management requires a combination of silvicultural practices, such as minimizing mechanical damage during harvest, removing infected individuals, and maintaining forest hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.
