Description
Irenopsis cupaniae is a species of fungus within the Meliolales order, primarily known as a pathogen that causes dark, superficial growth on the foliage of host plants, particularly within the Sapindaceae family. It is often associated with the group of fungi commonly referred to as sooty molds due to its appearance.
The fungus acts as an epiphyte, colonizing the surface of leaves and young stems. It does not penetrate deep into the plant tissues like some other pathogens, but by forming a dense, dark mycelial mat, it significantly impairs the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor and stunted growth in infested specimens.
Key symptoms include the presence of black, velvet-like colonies on the leaf surfaces. These colonies are distinct and can eventually coalesce to cover large areas of the leaf. Infected leaves may turn yellow or develop necrotic patches underneath the fungal growth, eventually leading to premature senescence and leaf drop if the infection is left untreated.
The development of Irenopsis cupaniae is heavily favored by warm, humid conditions and poor air circulation. It frequently colonizes leaves that have been covered in honeydew, a sugary substance excreted by sap-sucking insects like aphids and whiteflies.
