Description

Ischnoderma is a genus of bracket fungi that serves as a significant pathogen causing brown rot in woody plants. In agronomy and forest management, these fungi are identified as wood-decay organisms that penetrate trees through wounds in the bark, broken branches, or frost cracks, leading to internal degradation of the woody tissue.

The fungi commonly affect various tree species, including both coniferous and deciduous varieties such as apple trees, pears, beeches, and birches. As a sapro-parasitic organism, Ischnoderma exploits the natural defenses of weakened or aging trees, gradually colonizing the trunk and structural branches.

The symptoms of infestation are marked by the presence of leathery or corky fruiting bodies growing directly on the tree bark or stumps. These brackets often exhibit brown or reddish-brown coloration. Inside the wood, the infection causes a distinct breakdown of cellulose and lignin, resulting in a brittle, brown appearance known as cubical brown rot, which compromises the tree's structural integrity.

The development of Ischnoderma is highly dependent on high moisture levels and poor aeration. The fungi thrive in environments where tree wounds remain unprotected, allowing spores to establish colonies. Overcrowded plantations and areas with accumulated decaying organic matter serve as ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the mycelium.

The damage caused by these fungi often results in the premature death of the tree due to structural failure and loss of vitality. Professional prevention and control strategies include the following:

  • Prompt removal and safe disposal of all infected fruiting bodies and dead wood.
  • Protection of pruning wounds with appropriate fungicides or wound-sealing compounds.
  • Sanitary maintenance of the orchard or forest floor to remove potential inoculum sources like stumps.
